What is Italian citizenship by descent?
It's the recognition of Italian citizenship based on an Italian ancestor, following the bloodline (jure sanguinis), proving the complete documentary chain from your Italian ancestor down to you. Important: since the March 2025 reform (see below) the rules on how many generations can access it have changed, so every case needs to be reviewed individually before moving forward.

The 2025 reform changed the rules: read this before proceeding
As of 27/28 March 2025 (Decreto Tajani, later converted into Law 74/2025), Italy modified the automatic transmission of citizenship by descent. In general terms, for anyone starting a new case today, the automatic route now requires an Italian parent or grandparent — more distant generations (great-grandparents and beyond) no longer qualify automatically through this route, unless their case already had an application, consular appointment, or judicial claim filed before this cutoff date, which preserves the previous rules.
The topic is still being actively litigated in Italy: there are court rulings and Constitutional Court decisions with differing criteria depending on the case, and even a referral to the Court of Justice of the European Union still awaiting an answer. Because of this, we continue to work with great-grandchildren's files and later generations — but every case is assessed individually before moving forward, and we always recommend confirming your specific situation with a lawyer specialized in Italian citizenship, in addition to our translation work.
Two possible paths
Administrative route or judicial route
Which path fits your case depends on your specific situation (including your generation relative to your Italian ancestor, under the 2025 reform) — we guide you on which one applies to your case.
Administrative route
Handled before the competent Italian consulate, or directly in Italy. It's the traditional path, available if your case meets the requirements in force after the 2025 reform.
Judicial route
Filed before an Italian court: for excessive delays in the administrative route, or because your case (for example, great-grandchildren or later generations) now depends on the judicial route after the 2025 reform. The file requires asseverazione.

About Italian citizenship
It's the recognition of Italian citizenship based on an Italian ancestor, following the bloodline. It's handled through the administrative route (before the consulate or in Italy) or the judicial route, depending on your case and the rules in force since the March 2025 reform.
Since March 2025 (Decreto Tajani, Law 74/2025) it's no longer automatic for every generation: in general, the automatic route now requires an Italian parent or grandparent, unless your case already had an application, consular appointment, or judicial claim filed before 27/03/2025. The topic is still being litigated in Italy, so every case needs individual review.
The administrative route is handled before the Italian consulate or directly in Italy. The judicial route is filed for excessive delays in the administrative route, or because your generation relative to your Italian ancestor now depends on the judicial route after the 2025 reform, and requires filing your case before an Italian court, with asseverazione.
It depends on your family tree, but it generally includes birth, marriage and death records along the line of descent, and criminal background checks. We review your specific case to confirm exactly which records are needed.
It's the Italian tax identification number, required for several citizenship-related procedures. We guide you on how to apply for it based on your situation.
We help you locate it in historical archives, parishes or civil registries, or reconstruct it if the original can't be found.
